Sculpture

Long before John started experimenting in three-dimensional works using Venetian Paperwork, he used other sculptural processes, such as wood carvings, gypsum and paper maché to great effect.

Having trained as a woodcarver, draughtsman and restorer with Jack Perkins in the late 60s and having moved on to Prides of London (Bolsoms) as a woodcarver and cabinet maker in the early seventies, he put his skills to use not only in relation to restoration projects in the context of the Portobello scene but also created his own three-dimensional objects as an independent artist. Some of his dexterity in relation to three-dimensional works, Venetian Paperwork and wood carvings, no doubt have their foundations in this extensive and demanding training in relation to the three-dimensional visual arts.
